Allocasuarina are early colonisers after fire, they also have a reputation for being fire prone, perhaps because of the needles they shed profusely. Allocasuarina are dioecious, having different plants for each sex – the male trees look as though they are dying when they turn brown in early autumn because of their prolific pollen spores, the females bear fruits – nuts – which are an important food source for the endangered Glossy Black-Cockatoo.
