Tall Sedge, Gahnia clarkei, grows upto 2m tall, with stem diameters up to 120 mm and stems up to 10 m long. It is found along water-courses on the east coast of Australia, and makes an excellent reason for following ridgelines when walking off track. The serrated edges are dangerously sharp and trying to pass through a stand of Tall Sedge requires thick overalls, gloves and a scarf around the neck.
The Tall Sedge shown here was found in the gully on Hostel Creek, just to the west of the vegie garden at Manna Park. Click on the picture to download a higher resolution image (T.Hastings 2009).
