Forest Clematis, Clematis glycinoides, is a woody climbing vine, technically called a “Liana”, Vines like this are an important habitat elements as they help small animals climb into the trees to feed on insects, fruits or nectar. The leaf shape of Forest Clematis is different to other Clematis species.

The white star you see is made up of sepals, which surround the tiny flowers. The seeds are surrounded by long fibres, which form a ball about 5cm diameter, so that the seed floats on the wind.

The name “Headache Vine” comes from an American clematis species, which was used by Native Americans as a treatment for migrane headaches, nervous disorders and some skin infections. Aboriginal use is unknown.
