Blackbutt was too nice for its own good and was almost completely cut out of Mandeni Park by the early settlers.   It grows tall and straight, has an attractive light texture, good straight grain and reasonable durability.   It also prefers good soil and the damp gullies that were favoured by farmers.

There are no Blackbutt left at Manna Park but there is still a number of very tall, over 35 metres high, trees in the area around BBQ Dam at Mandeni.   There is a wonderful old habitat tree behind BBQ Green, we captured several (or maybe the same individual several times!) Eastern Pigmy Possums near it in 2007.    Blackbutt suffered badly from BMAD but have recovered well near “Mandeni”.    (They were one of the few species where we found lots of lerps on their leaves although we do not blame the psyllids for their demise.)

We had to remove some of the taller trees near Cabin 10  because of the danger to children from small (40 mm diameter) dead branches being shed from 25 metres up.   Several were also dangerous because of infestation by termites, possibly due to their age.    There is also a young stand just north of the Golf Centre.
