This is one of the largest Banksias, growing to 20 meters in height.  It favors sandy coastal soils typically found on Mandeni Park.  Its flower spikes are huge (up to 14 cm in length), and are very important source of nectar for birds such as Honeyeaters.

Coast Banksia is a common and important species at Mandeni Park.  It can be commonly seen in the forest either side of Mandeni’s entrance drive, and in the area named “Banksias” north of Big Dam.  Some large examples are present at the Cross Roads where rainforest species are being planted and watered from water in New Dam.  This is a special area to visit, with its large, rustic picnic tables and an abundance of small birds.

During 2009 a 3-day bird banding exercise here noted 15 species of small birds.  The frequent watering here attracts birds during dry conditions, but the Coast Banksias also attract many birds.  During the early morning banding activities, we noticed many species using Coast Banksia.
