The distribution of this species of Box is confined to coastal mixed forests along the SE coast of Australia. It can grow twice as tall as most other eucalypts in the Box group, producing magnificent individuals up to 45 meters tall on better soils such as those found on alluvial flats.
Its floral components are distinctive with their long, slender pedicels, which should be looked for underneath trees in the field to confirm the identity of the tree in question.
The wood is very hard and durable, and because individuals can grow tall and straight, this species has been sought after for milling into poles and use for heavy construction.
Manna Park has some magnificent specimens of Coast grey Box to see. And given that this species has been cleared from many coastal areas since settlement, the Park is an important refuge. The large specimen in the Photo Gallery can be seen in the forest behind the Hostel at Manna Park. There is a track leading SW from the Hostel to a large clearing 4-500 meters distant where you can view this tree on the southern edge of the clearing (582300E 190500N).
