The genus name Epacris comes from the Greek words, epi, meaning “upon”, and acris, meaning “summit”. This is because the first Epacris species identified were found upon a summit. Most Epacridaceae species have tough, spiky leaves, which are adaptation to harsh climates like mountain-tops. The species name impressa means indented, referring to indentations at the base of the flower.

Common Heath has a variety of colours, from white to pink to bright red. The species is widely cultivated , and the “Bega” form shown here is one of the most adaptable and has bright red flowers.

The plant shown here was found in the Golf Course at Mandeni, along tracks near the 9th hole. Click on the picture to download a higher resolution image (T.Hastings 6/10/09).
