The Grasshopper shown here is a true grasshopper; it lives in grass, hops, and is not a cricket. This Grasshopper has short antennae, wings and a non-pointed head, which identifies it as belonging to the Acrididae Family. In Australia the Family includes 712 species in 6 sub-families. This example may belong to the Oedipodidae subfamily, which have banded wings. This type of grasshopper is active during the day, feeding on grass. They use their powerful long legs to hop short distances and launch into flight. The example shown here is a little damaged as it was collected from the front of a car 18th December 2009 (T.Hastings). Click on any thumbnail to download a high resolution image. |
