Mandeni Park Map PDF Print E-mail

Many people are intimidated by maps. Our map, as shown in the thumbnail on the right, is basically just the same as any street directory map – it has place names and a system of squares to help locate smaller areas such as where orchids might be growing.

The main difference is that whereas a street directory usually has numbers on two sides and letters on the other two, we only have numbers - along all four sides.

On the main “Mandeni” section of the map the numbers along the bottom and across the top go from 59,000 to 60,800 and are marked every 100 metres. These are called “Eastings” – they actually measure the distance east from a point out past Wolumla. The numbers along the vertical sides go from 17,600 to 19,300 north of some point around Eden and are called “Northings”. By convention, the Eastings are given first.

For example: the target at the Golf Centre, roughly where the archery is located is about 60,000 East and 18,500 North.

To allow more accurate readings we place the distance measurements on the edges of the “squares” whereas the street directory puts them in the middles of the edges. You could number squares on our map as 60,500 East and 18,500 North to get the same effect.

We do not need accurate co-ordinates for pictures of birds because they are always moving around anyhow. We do need accurate co-ordinates of a bush or orchid if someone else is going to find it. So we can accept a location as “near the Rainforest” or “Cabin area” or “MP Vegie Garden” for your bird pictures. The date is usually recorded automatically by your digital camera and can be found by looking at “properties”.

GPS

A GPS can be set to the same grid co-ordinates as our map. If you already have a GPS please use it, BUT you don’t need a GPS to describe your location for us.

We are not trying to make you into surveyors, we just want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to find things. In the Geography section of the website I have included a brief description of every location marked on the map.

We ask for any suggestions or questions – everything is electronic so it is easy for us to make changes at any time.
