Wombats are very unpopular with most farmers but are very welcome at Mandeni Park. Wombats are susceptible to attack by parasites that cause “mange”, blindness and eventually death. We try to give them a hand by spraying them to kill the parasites, we have added cochineal dye to the spray so that we can have a rough idea of how much spray has been put on each wombat. Others believe in only treating them with “natural or organic” cures such as sulphur!
Wombats are always keen to leave their visiting cards wherever we have been working, a favourite trick is to balance a large poo on our tee markers.
Wombats can usually be seen around the hostel area at dusk, they have a number of burrows in the banks of Hostel Creek and other creeks throughout the property.
