Males of the species have pale-yellow to yellow-white foreheads, and pink breasts. Both males and females have an easily discernible white line around and close to their eyes. Common Bronzewings can also have patches of red, blue, green, yellow and purple on their wings, a feature which is characteristic of all Bronzewing pigeons. Young birds are usually duller in color and browner than the mature Common Bronzewing.

Common Bronzewings release a milky substance from their crop to feed their young.

The Common Bronzewing is a frequent site at Mandeni Park. Their “mournful” calls can also be heard, and their wing beating in flight is quite audible, particularly if they are startled. Individuals spend a lot of time on the ground feeding and interacting, and are often startled by walkers nearby. The proportions of each color on the wing will depend on the angle of light reflectance. Images in the Gallery below show yellow, green and purple on a Mandeni bird near Cabin 1.
